Fair Work Annual Wage Review 2022–23 Decision

On 2 June 2023, the Fair Work Commission handed down its Annual Wage Review 2022–23 decision, increasing minimum wages for millions of Australian employees. The new rates took effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2023.

The Commission increased modern award minimum wages by 5.75%. The National Minimum Wage increased to $23.23 per hour or $882.80 per week (based on a 38-hour week). This represented an 8.6% increase because the National Minimum Wage was first realigned with the C13 classification rate before the 5.75% increase was applied.

Employers were required to update payroll systems, review award classifications, and ensure employees received the correct minimum rates from the effective date. The decision reflected the Commission’s consideration of inflation, cost-of-living pressures, economic conditions, and the need to provide a fair safety net for low-paid workers.
